Mark 10:32-45; Matthew 20:20-28
Selfishness is a modern-day plague. It is also a 1st century problem. From Jesus’ time on earth and throughout the New Testament, people have struggled with a “me first” mentality. In Philippians 2:3- 4, we are reminded, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
In the New Testament church people demanded their rights. No different than today. 1 Corinthians 6:6-8.
James, John, and their mom were self-focused. Jesus’ death on the Cross is a little over a week away. And amid Jesus’ focus on Jerusalem, James and John turn the focus to themselves. Insensitive and self-focused, they will call for a private meeting.
